The internally Displaced persons in Kisenyi Village, Komogola Subcounty Kiryandongo District have been blessed with electric pumped borehole after years of water scarcity.
The borehole with electric water project was donated by Malaysian Friends led by Dr. Jamila Jaafar and implemented by Okoa mother and Child Initiative.
Before the establishment of the water system, residents, majority of whom were displaced and relocated there from different parts of Uganda, were buying a 20 jerrican of water at 1000/= from the only hand borehole which existed.
Sheikh Omar Musa, the area Imam explains that after the establishment of the water system, residents now access water at only 200 shillings per 20 litter jerrican.
???Before the establishment of the water System, residents could cue for 12 hours to get water higher price of 1000 per 20 litters.??? Sheikh Musa explained.
The project is managed by the mosque management committee under the supervision of Okoa mother and child Initiative.
Dr. Jamila Jafaar, the lead funds mobilizer says that the idea of collecting 200 shillings per jerrican aimed at providing water at affordable price, ensuring self-sustainability of the project and mobilizing community funds to fund other projects.
Mr. Yusuf Musisi, the project manager of Okoa, explains that the revenue got from water is used to pay Quran teachers at Madrasa, repair and re-service the water system as well as re-fueling the generator.
Besides paying teachers and repair of the system, part of the money was also used to support community projects. For example, the pit latrine for the mosque and the house for the area Imam were constructed with funds from the water.
Mr. Musis says that Okoa is targeting to construct similar project in Mududa village which hosts refugees from South Sudan and victims of Bududa mudslide who were relocated there after Mudslides hit their former District in 2010.
